Michelle has worked as a professional artist for twenty
years. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the late 80’s, she
worked as a commissioned scrimshaw artist for a local gallery for ten
years. In need of a new challenge, she then worked as an illustrator for
children’s educational books, and has published over twenty titles.
Michelle now focuses her energy on painting oils and teaching drawing and
painting. Recently, Michelle has completed numerous portrait commissions
and been accepted into local juried shows. Her scrimshaw and paintings can
be found in many private collections all over the country.
As a strong believer in life-long learning, Michelle regularly takes
workshops and classes at the Gage Academy, studying classical drawing and
painting. Her mediums include watercolor and oil, which she uses to paint
figures and portraits, landscapes and still-life subjects.
Michelle has developed a gentle teaching style that encourages students to
use their own voice for personal expression. A relaxed, informal
environment where students can enjoy their exploration of art is fostered.
At the beginning of each session, Michelle will discover each student’s
aspirations, then use traditional methods to help
them reach their goals. Particular attention will be given to composition,
value, color theory and brush handling. Demonstration of basic concepts and
supporting printed materials will be included in each lesson.

Michelle’s Fall Youth Classes at the Arts Umbrella
New in Fall 2011-2012
My youth
classes will be broken into five 7-week sessions.
New
Youth Class on Wednesday evenings for ages 9 to 12.
Multi Media Art
Class: Drawing, Painting and Sculpting
Learn about
a variety of materials and techniques, such as watercolor, acrylic paint,
collage, drawing with pencils, colored pencils and pastels, and sculpting
with polymer clay and recycled materials. We will be
emphasizing the building of imagery based on basic geometric shapes;
always starting with the largest shapes first and working down to
details. As is true for any beginning artist the process of
creation is more important than the finished product.
