Rick has been teaching at Arts Umbrella for eighteen years. He was born in Shelton, Washington, the same day Claude Monet passedaway. He began drawing at the age of four. By the age of six, his crayon studies looked like some of Monet's early art works. He lived at Lake Cushman forseveral years and still remembers the lily pads and blossoms on a small pondnamed "Pot Holes." Some of his watercolors have been of this subject matter. His father kept encouraging him to follow his natural talent and often said to friends that the spirit of the master must have been passed on to his son.

After his service in the Navy, Rick returned to the Northwest. He attended the Burnley School of Art and studied in the evenings with well-known artists Fred Marshall, Robert Fetterly, Andrew Chin, and Greta Ritter. A two-seek session at Seaview, Washington with Charles Mulvey introduced him to what is now his medium of choice, watercolor.

Rick's paintings have shown at the Museum of History and Industry, Bellevue Museum of Art, Vancouver, B.C. Museum of Art, and at the United States Exhibit, Expo', Tokyo, Japan. Local art fairs have shown his work as well, including the Puyallup Fair art exhibit, Edmonds Art Festival, and Bellevue Art Fair. First place wins are in his record of achievements.

This past August, Rick's works made a clean sweep at the Jefferson County Fair! He took three first-place prizes, as well as best of show for recent still-life and landscape paintings. You can see one of the paintings at Arts Umbrella: Moored Boats is hanging above the cash register.

Having recently moved back to the Olympic Peninsula, Rick hopes to capture some of the outstanding beauty of the area in his future paintings.

Rick has returned to his roots. "You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy."
